Importance of Soil Sampling

Successful crop production is reliant on effective nutrient management. Soil sampling assists in finding out what nutrients are currently in your field.

Soil sampling is important as it;
  • Measures the nutrients that are left in your field following harvest
  • Tells you which nutrients are lacking or are in excess throughout the soil in a field
  • Helps you determine the most favorable fertilizer plan to increase or maintain yields for the following year

Ideally for spring seeding you want to test your soil in the fall post-harvest before the ground freezes.

This allows you to determine the soils fertility, nutrient deficiencies and excesses and come up with the best plan as you head into spring and prepare for next years crop.

Doing a conventional soil sampling one takes 10 – 15 samples from throughout a field.

To get an accurate representation of the field stay away from hill tops and low spots and take soil from areas of the field where the yield is usually average. The results obtained should then be an average representation of the field.

Automatic Filling System with John Deere Active Fill Control

John Deere Active Fill Control is the next step for higher productivity and efficiency while forage harvesting. It is impossible for an forage harvester (SPFH) operator to constantly monitor the spout position while navigating fields and dealing with changing conditions.

That is where Active Fill Control comes in to save the day with automated truck or trailer filling. Cameras automatically detect the truck or trailer and current fill level once alongside the SPFH, ensuring consistent filling by managing spout steering, flap automation and fill strategy execution.

Watch Active Fill in action on one of our clients units below. You can see how the arrow on the monitor indicates where to fill and as it moves the spout adjusts to match that location.

Active Fill Control is available as a factory-installed option on all 8000 Series SPFH.

John Deere ActiveYield = Active Calibration

Eliminate manual yield calibrations by adding an ActiveYield Kit to your John Deere S Series combine.

So how does ActiveYield work?

ActiveYield provides continuous calibration of the mass flow sensor through load cells installed in the grain tank.

The load cells estimate the change in weight of grain, as the grain tank fills. The ActiveYield Monitor controller software in the moisture sensor compares the grain tank load cell data to the Clean Grain Elevator mass flow sensor data and will adjust the Mass Flow Flow sensor calibration curve to minimize error.

This allows for automatic calibrations while you're running; improving real-time time decision making as ActiveYield enhances the accuracy of the combine's yield data.

And best of all you didn't have any downtime while you were manually calibrating!

ActiveYield Kits are available for Model Year 12 - 18 Combines. Talk to your local Martin Deerline Parts Department to get a quote today.

Tips To Avoid Stale Fuel In Your Lawn Mower

Did you know; that gas sitting in your lawn mower tank or a jerry can for more than 30 days begins to degrade?

Ethanol and water in the gasoline can form acids that will corrode your carburetor and prevent your mower from running. Below are some helpful tips to avoid stale fuel and ultimately larger repair issues for your mower.

  • Buy only the amount of gas that you need or are going to use in the near future. Even fuel sitting in a container will go stale due to exposure to oxygen.
  • Fill your tank to the top after you mow, before you put your machine away. Prior to storing for winter you will want to drain the fuel out.
  • Consider using premium fuel. Any gasoline containing more than 10% ethanol can create engine problems caused by the degrading and/or corrosion of seals, gaskets and metal parts.
  • Use fuel stabilizer all season long to extend the shelf life of gas. Add stabilizer right away when you get your gas so it can start working immediately and help keep your carburetor clean.
  • For handheld products that require a mixed fuel, we recommend using the pre-mixed fuels. These are an excellent option if your not using the equipment very often as pre-mixed fuel such as Stihl's MotoMix has a two year shelf life once opened.
Ultimately, good fuel helps keep engines healthy and running smooth, which results in less money spent in the service department!
